Problem

Households around the world waste tons of freshly prepared meals every day, while many people still face food insecurity. Despite the desire to share extra food, individuals lacked an easy, trustworthy, and accessible way to donate meals directly to local centers — without relying on monetary donations.

Process

I began with primary user research, interviewing participants about how they would use an app to share extra meals. Insights revealed that people were motivated to donate food but needed a simple, fast, and secure solution.

Key steps included:

  • Creating detailed personas such as Mari, a home cook eager to share her meals, and Phil, a project manager focused on reducing waste.

  • Designing wireframes and low-fidelity prototypes to map user flows and test ideas quickly.

  • Conducting an unmoderated usability study with 5 participants in the U.S. to identify usability issues and opportunities for improvement.

• Iterating designs based on feedback to include language accessibility, streamlined navigation, and social sharing options.

Solution

The result was FoodWill, a donation service app that connects households with local donation centers to share home-cooked meals in just a few steps.

Core features:

  • Quick-Start Donation: A one-tap donation flow from the home screen.

  • Map-Based Navigation: Users can easily locate and connect with nearby donation centers.

  • Social Sharing: Encourages participation by allowing users to share their donation stories.

  • Accessibility-First Design: Language options, high-contrast color schemes, and clear iconography support users of all abilities.

  • Security-Driven Approach: User data protection, secure location handling, and transparent tracking features ensure trust and safety throughout the donation process.

Outcome

  • 40% faster task completion: Usability testing showed participants completed the donation process significantly faster after key refinements.

  • Increased user trust: Shareable confirmations and secure delivery tracking boosted confidence and repeat engagement.

  • Meaningful social impact: FoodWill demonstrates how UX design and cybersecurity principles can work together to reduce waste, fight hunger, and make social good scalable.

Next Steps

  • Replace the recipe section with more relevant trust-building content.

  • Conduct further user interviews to refine safety and reliability features.

  • Expand the platform with a responsive web version for broader reach.

What I Learned
Designing for social impact requires balancing simplicity, trust, and motivation. I learned that users are more likely to complete their journey when the process is straightforward and makes them feel good about their contribution.
